  • Project runs from 01/03/2012 till 01/08/2012.
‘A future strengthened by the past’ is a youth driven initiative which includes interaction between youth with fewer opportunities and elderly using non-formal techniques of education. The youth will be educated about contemporary issues relating to the priority themes and will then share this information with their elderly partners. The elderly will also in turn share youthful issues from their generation which the youth will use for comparative report. Two types of activities are included in the project proposal taking place in İzmir - trainings including workshops and seminars for under-privileged youth on ‘Youth in Action’ annual priority topics - and a national youth initiative involving a youth-elderly person pairing scheme in order to educate each other about the social responsibility of youth both past and present. Through the youth being both students in the workshops and teachers to their elderly partners, peer-learning will take place enabling young people to become active citizens in İzmir. The results of the activities set in the work programme will add value to the ‘Youth in Action’ initiative. Development of skills and competences in youth (communication skills, literacy skills, creative and lateral-thinking skills) through non-formal learning activities. We will encourage awareness among young people, giving priority to education and training of young people with fewer opportunities (e.g youth who do not have the academic/socio-cultural/financial capacity to attend university). Tolerance and understanding between the young and the elderly, with old people becoming more aware of contemporary issues and youth about the past, will also be increased during this project. After this process the youth will write their own reports about what they have learned about the present and future from their workshops and about the past from their eldery partners which will be disseminated as a handbook and included on a webpage for future youth programmes.
