  • Introduction:
Kenya's education system is based on an 8-4-4 system, which is eight years in primary school, four years in secondary school and four years in tertiary education. Despite the Kenyan government's declaration of a Free Primary Education (FPE) policy, over 1.7 million children remain out of school, the majority of who are children living in poverty.

The lack of opportunity for children to be educated and live in peaceful and developed environment is rooted in poverty and its cultural manifestations.

The children of youth age affected by poverty, diseases (HIV/AIDS), violence (family conflicts and tribal crashes are desperately in need of immediate income and the subsequent denial of education just creates a prolonged cycle that further traps them in poverty. Access to education is prohibitively expensive and inaccessible to them due to a lack of support.

    Youth Education Support
Youth Education Support [YES] [www.yes.or.ke] is a non-profit organization that works with friends around the world to support a growing number of youths who have been excluded or exclude themselves from the education and training system mainly due to effects from family poverty, diseases (HIV/AIDS), violence (family conflicts and tribal crashes).

YES works to mitigate the effects of poverty on youth education so that they can participate in their communities to realize peace and sustainable development. We believe that supporting youths through education allows them to participate in promoting a culture of peace and development in their communities and without sufficient support; youths cannot be able to overcome the abusive cycle of poverty and exclusion in participation.

Through the YES program, the youths are able to be educated in secondary schools and trained in career skills such as iCT including digital computer literacy, graphics design, web design and media [video and film], entrepreneurship, life and other vocational skills.
